WILHELMINA MINA GATES

November 20, 1927 - April 5, 2014


GatesWilhelmina “Mina” Gates, 86, a longtime resident of the Cornelius community, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, April 5, 2014 at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro, with her family by her side.

A Graveside Services will be held on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Mt. View Memorial Gardens, 499 Watercrest Road in Forest Grove, with Pastor Jack Swartwood of the Tigard Foursquare Church, officiating. The family requests that you wear some purple, in honor of Mina.

WILHELMINA “MINA” GATES was born on November 20, 1927 in Bushnell, South Dakota. She was the daughter of the late William Vaandering and Johanna H. (VanOmen) Vaandering. In 1935, she moved with her family to Oregon, settling on Carpenter Creek Road in Forest Grove. Mina was raised in Forest Grove and attended the Carpenter Creek School and later Forest Grove High School, having been a graduate with the Forest Grove High School Class of 1947.

Mina was united in marriage to Alfred “Al” Gates on June the 22, 1970 in Virginia City, Nevada.

Following their marriage they made their home in Klamath Falls, Oregon and later they moved to the Forest Grove community where they made many memories with their family.

Mina was preceded in death by her husband, Al, in 1989, after celebrating over 19 wonderful years of marriage together. Following Al’s passing, Mina moved to the Forest Hills Mobile Home Park in Cornelius, Oregon, where she has resided since. She enjoyed to fellowship with other residents at the clubhouse.

She was a homemaker, having stayed home to raise her children.

Mina was a member of the Forest Grove Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #2440 Elkettes and a Local Bowling League where she competed and won numerous awards. Gates

She enjoyed gardening, caring for her flowers, bowling and loving her dogs, “Minibell” and “Rocky”. Mina also enjoyed cross-stitching, having made blankets for her great grandchildren and crocheting quilts for her family, having sent some to her family in Holland. She loved to take road trips with her family, especially to the beach. Mina also enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mina was known by many and loved by all.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Johanna Vaandering; her four brothers, John Vaandering, Art Vaandering, Ben Vaandering and Hank Vaandering and her granddaughter, Chantel Spring Farris.

Survivors include her six children and their spouses, Dale and Carley Hollingsworth, of Hillsboro, Oregon; Tim Holllingsworth, of Forest Grove, Oregon; Cheryl and Howard Rice, of Forest Grove, Oregon; James and Ruth Farris, of Forest Grove, Oregon; Ronda and Paul Rose, of Vancouver, Washington and David and Christine Barr, of Castle Rock, Washington; her brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Ruth Vaandering, of Hillsboro, Oregon; her two sisters and a brother-in-law, Marie Lebeck, of Independence, Oregon and Betty and Jerry Mooneyham, of Bullhead City, Arizona and her sister-in-law, Alice Vaandering, of Forest Grove, Oregon.

Also surviving are many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mina has requested that all potted plants be brought, by the family to the Vaandering homestead pond on Carpenter Creek, in her memory.
