John B. Baird

Gresham resident John B. Baird died Sunday, Oct. 20. He was 87.

A committal service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at Willamette National Cemetery.

John was born April 24, 1926, in Portland. At age 12, John moved with his family to their native country of Scotland. He was raised there and served in the U.S. Army in Scotland during World War II.

After his honorable discharge, John returned to the United States and joined the Marine Corps, serving in the Korean War. He survived the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, earning him the distinction of being one of the “Chosin Few.”

After his service, he moved back to Oregon, where he spent the rest of his life. John enjoyed fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities. He was good at fixing and building things, and built an airplane with one of his friends that flew successfully.

John married Doreen Gieber in March 1988. She was his second wife.

John is survived by his wife, Doreen; children, Roxanne Ramseyer, Brook Baird and Brad Baird; step-daughter, Denise (Dale) Watts; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Genalee Brock

Sandy resident Genalee Brock died Wednesday, Oct. 23, in Gresham. She was 68.

A celebration of life will be scheduled. Sandy Funeral Home is handling arrangements. A full obituary will run in a future edition of The Outlook.

Maxine Hampton

Maxine Hampton

Gresham resident, Maxine Hampton passed away peacefully on October 16, 2013 at the age of 89. She will be greatly missed by the many that loved and admired her. She was born February 11, 1924 to Russell and Herma Smith in Tigerton, Wisconsin. After graduating high school, Maxine made her way to Fairbanks, Alaska where she met and married the love of her life, Dr. Donavon E. Hampton II. They worked side by side in Don’s Chiropractic Clinic before retiring to Gresham, Oregon in 1985. Don and Maxine immersed themselves in the support of the Marine organization “The Chosin Few,” with Maxine continuing her generous support to not only the Chosin but also Don’s alma mater Western States Chiropractic College after her husband’s death. Maxine possessed a positive, generous spirit who extended her gift of hospitality to everyone she met. She was a talented self-taught artist who created beautiful landscape and floral paintings as well as intricate needle point creations. Many walls in homes today are graced with one of Maxine’s masterpieces. No challenge was too great for Maxine; she was a firm believer that all things are possible and touched the hearts of many people with her happy, positive attitude. She had the gift of making each person she met feel special.

Maxine is survived by her brother Alan D. Smith and his wife Elizabeth of Sedona, AZ; and her two grandchildren Amanda M. Hampton and Donavon E. Hampton IV of Monmouth, Oregon.

A graveside service will be held Monday, October 28th at 2:30 PM at Willamette National Cemetery.
