Born in Portland, Oregon on October 12th 1941, and raised in Seaside and Gearhart Oregon, Joan was the eldest daughter of Barbara and Carl Nydegger and the eldest sister of 5 siblings; Joe, Dorothy, Molly, Pat, and Rich. She graduated Seaside High school and attended University of Portland and San Jose State earning a degree in English Literature. She worked for a stint as a teacher in Guam and then locally both in high schools and colleges. Joan made Sandy OR home for over 30 years raising all of her children- Katy, Barb, Beth, Amy, Robert, and Sean on Cottontail Drive. Among Joans many jobs and roles, throughout her full life: substitute teacher, entrepreneur, accomplished and knowledgeable gardener, incredible cook, avid reader, writer, masters degree student, mother, grandmother, advocate, humorist, great listener, and best friend to many. She will be remembered for much, but most often for her love of gardening, cooking, and recitations of famous quotes and stories, often those shared from her life-long reading of The New Yorker and Harpers. In addition, Joan was a wonderful grandmother to 16 grandchildren, with whom she had the opportunity to share her wisdom and wit. Her memory will continue on through stories of her life and accomplishments, shared among family and friends.
At Joans request, an Irish Wake will serve in her honor, on Saturday February 8th. Friends and family are invited to share happy memories, a quote or two, a song, a joke, and to eat, drink and be merry. Daughter Amie Raines will host the open house from 12-6---the address is 1320 NW 9th Gresham OR 97030. A slideshow and a time to share your memories are planned for after 4pm.
