Bret HemenwayMadras resident Bret A. Hemenway, 50, passed away on Aug. 25, 2013, after being struck by lightning. A celebration of life service was held Aug. 31, at Cornerstone Baptist Church. Bret was born on March 17, 1963, in Cottage Grove, to Ed and Betty Hemenway. He graduated from Delight Valley Christian School and later from Lane Community College with a degree in agricultural and diesel repair.

He married Connie on May 1, 1982, in Cottage Grove. They lived in Cottage Grove until his parents bought a hay farm in Madras that same year. He ran his parent’s hay farm before taking it over in 1996, raising alfalfa and grass hay. Their daughter Shelby was born Dec. 2, 1990, and son Colton was born Oct. 2, 1994.

Bret loved being outdoors. When he wasn’t working on the farm, he was fishing, hunting, or riding his motorcycles with his family and friends. He was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, and he leaves many close friends from that fellowship.

He is survived by Connie Hemenway, his wife of 31 years; and their children Colton and Shelby; his brothers, Troy Hemenway and his wife Brenda, and Danny Hemenway, all of Cottage Grove; his sister, Teresa Cochell and her husband Gale of Eugene; and his father, Ed Hemenway of Madras. He was preceded in death by his mother Betty Hemenway. Bret lived life to the fullest and gave everything, from farming to riding his motorcycles, fishing, and hunting, 110 percent. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
