John Anton Chotard

September 5, 1925 - September 13, 2013-

Madras resident John Anton Chotard passed away on Sept. 13, 2013, at the age of 88.

He was born Sept. 5, 1925, in Malin, Ore., to Joseph and Antonette (Kakuska) Chotard, the youngest of nine children.

He attended school in Malin until leaving in his senior year to serve in the U.S. Navy. Eventually, at age 20, he was assigned to the submarine division. He was on a sub, headed for Antarctica in 1946, and got as far as the Panama Canal, when he was offered the chance to be discharged and took it. He returned to Malin to farm with his brother Joe until moving to Madras to farm in 1949.

In 1950, John purchased their current farm, built a house and married Mildred Reid on April 9, 1950. To their union was born Edward John, and later they adopted daughter, Jeanette Carol, who passed away in a car accident at age 28.

For a number of years, besides farming, John operated the Madras Sanitary Service. In later years, he returned to farming. He was a long-time member of the Jefferson County Farm Bureau and an elder at the Madras Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Chotard; son, Edward Chotard; and grandchildren, Sara (and Grady) Johnson, Lisa Philibert, and Elisha Steinbach; and four great-grandchildren.

A burial service will be held at Mount Jefferson Memorial Park Cemetery in Madras at 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 19, followed by a memorial service at Madras Christian Church at 11 a.m., with lunch to follow.

Memorials may be made to the church, or the charity of one’s choice.
