Donald Leo Watkins

May 28, 1946 - September 26, 2013-

Madras resident Donald Leo Watkins, 67, passed away on Sept. 26, 2013, at St. Charles Bend.

He was born May 28, 1946, in The Dalles to Leo and Selma (Richelderfer) Watkins. He grew up in Wasco, attended school there, and worked on the family farm. He graduated from Sherman County High School.

Don served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1969, with a one-year tour of duty in Danang, Vietnam, from 1968-69, where he served until his discharge.

On Aug. 10, 1985, he married Dorothy Schloneger in Madras, and they settled here. He was employed at the Warm Springs Forest Products Industries mill from 1972-1991, and then at Keith Manufacturing from 1993-2011.

Don was a reserve officer for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department from 1984-89, and was also a volunteer with the Jefferson County Fire District from 1977-92. He was a member of the Living Hope Christian Center.

He enjoyed being a race car fan, and his favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt. Don also raced his own cars at the Madras Speedway from 1985-96.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Watkins of Madras; sons, Timothy Watkins and his wife, SkyLynn, of Madras, Scott Watkins and his wife, Athena, of Vancouver, Wash., and Chris Watkins of Tennessee Colony, Texas; daughters, Kristina Hensley and her husband, Gene, of Hutlo, Texas, and Patricia Watkins of Gresham; brother, Gene Gosson of McMinnville and his wife, Lorna; sisters, Judy Price and her husband, Vance, of Wattsburg, Wash., and Joanne Buck of Moro and her husband, John; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Selma Watkins, and his daughter, Catrina Watkins.

Memorial services were held Oct. 2, at Living Hope Christian Center in Madras, with Autumn Funerals of Redmond in charge of arrangements.
