Jimmie Nelsen Woods

November 30, 1938 - December 20, 2013-

Jimmy Woods     Jimmie Nelsen Woods said goodbye to this world and hello to his eternal home in heaven on December 20, 2013 at the age of 75. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, foster parent, noted educator, pastor, administrator, coach, sportsman and volunteer.

Born in Los Angeles to the late Raymond and Lela Woods, at four years of age they moved to Eugene, Oregon where Jim graduated from Eugene High School. He met his wife Melva while attending Bethany Bible College in Santa Cruz, CA and together they pastored Boulder Creek A/G church. He received his B.A. from Evangel College, Springfield, MO, and an M.A. from the University of Oregon. He was accepted into the University of Oregon PhD. in Education Administration program and later received his School Administrator Certificate from University of Alaska, Fairbanks.

He taught and coached in public schools at Kiona-Benton School in Benton City, WA., Monroe Junior High, Eugene, OR., and Tok School, Tok, AK. During these years he took four student groups to Europe and one to Close-Up in Washington, DC. Jim founded and was principal of Willamette Christian School, Eugene, OR. He also was the principal at Gaarde Christian School, Tigard, OR, Evergreen Christian School Winton, CA and North Clackamas Christian School, Oregon City, OR.

     He received numerous accolades and awards including Alaska’s Basketball Coach of the Year four times and President George Bush’s “Volunteer Service Award.” His impact was profoundly  felt in the lives of countless students and families across the Pacific Northwest. They were all an integral part of his life and he cherished them deeply, keeping in touch with many throughout the years.

     He was Ordained in the Assemblies of God and served as Associate Pastor at: Willamette Christian Center, Eugene, OR; Tigard A/G, Tigard, OR;  Anchorage First, Anchorage, AK; Evergreen Christian Center, Winton, CA; and Neighborhood Church, Tualatin, OR. In Tok, AK he served as Senior Pastor. While in Alaska he served as the State Christian Education Director conducting conventions, seminars, summer camps.

     Jim also enjoyed many volunteer opportunities including: Interim Director of Shadow of His Wings Orphanage in Monjas, Guatemala; maintenance at Continental Theological Seminary, Brussels, Belgium and Silver Lake Camp, Spokane,WA; State Park host in Idaho and Oregon; Prison ministry in Ontario and Madras, OR; Seniors ministry at Living Hope Christian Center, Madras, OR; and Madras Cancer Support Group.

     Traveling in their RV to Palm Springs, Mexico, Yuma or coast to coast was one of Jim and Melva’s favorite pastimes, especially with lifelong friends.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Melva; daughter Charity Lovelace (Craig) of Wasilla, AK; son Chaplain Timothy Woods (Denise) of Madras; grandchildren: Candace Datz (Gil) of Colorado Springs, CO; Caleb Lovelace (Brittany) of Anchorage, AK, Joshua Woods (Stephanie) of Hermiston, OR, and Casey Lovelace of Anchorage, AK; one great grandson James Woods, Hermiston, OR; sister Karol Norris (Marty) of Harrisburg, OR and many special cousins. He was preceded in death nine months ago by his sister Kay Thomas.

His family would like to thank Hospice of Madras for granting Jim’s wish to spend his final days at home.

     A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 11 at 1:00 PM at Living Hope Christian Center, 25 NE A St., Madras. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Shadow of His Wings Orphanage. Donations may be made through Living Hope Christian Center.
