Jack Gale Smith Thompson

Sept. 6, 1937-Sept. 2, 2013

Sandy resident Jack Gale Smith Thompson died Monday, Sept. 2. He was 75.

A funeral service was held Monday, Sept. 9, at Sandy Funeral Home.

Jack was born Sept. 6, 1937, to Pearl (Massengale) and Howard Smith, in Hermiston. He graduated in 1955 from Elmira High School in Eugene and immediately joined the Navy Reserve.

Jack served in the Navy Reserve for 30 years, retiring in 1986. He also worked driving trucks for companies such as Troutdale Sand and Gravel.

Jack married Vida Kaiser on Dec. 28, 1958, in Junction City.

He was a member of the Sandy Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed camping, traveling, watching University of Oregon football games and spending time with his beloved dog, Annie.

Survivors include his wife; son, Troy Thompson; daughter, Tammy Scarlett; sister, Patty Crow; and two grandchildren.

Monte “Dean” Cumiford

Jan. 23, 1953-Aug. 30, 2013

Monte “Dean” Cumiford of Boring died Friday, Aug. 30, from lung cancer. He was 60.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Boring.

Dean was born Jan. 23, 1953, in Hood River to Alva and Jenny (Dinsmore) Cumiford.

He married Kathy Rogers and worked as a material handler for Atlas Copco Wagner.

He is survived by his wife; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Tiffany Cumiford; and three grandchildren.

April (Eichner) Palm

April 10, 1975-Aug. 20, 2013

East County resident April (Eichner) Palm died Tuesday, Aug. 20, from cervical cancer. She was 38.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at Pleasant Home United Methodist Church in Gresham.

April was born April 10, 1975, to Rhonda and Larry Eichner.

She is survived by her parents; son, Bryan Bacon; half-brother, Adam Palm; stepsisters, Jolene Galvin, Shelly Northrup and Tina Dibbern; stepbrothers, J.R. Griener and Deric Northrup; and other extended relatives and friends.

Norbert “Norb” F. Paulus

March 31, 1949-Aug. 27, 2013

Norbert “Norb” F. Paulus of Boring died Tuesday, Aug. 27. He was 64.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at First Baptist Church of Gresham.

Norb was born March 31, 1949, in Syracuse, N.Y., to James and Shirley Paulus.

He attended Corcoran High School and graduated from State University of New York at Buffalo with his bachelor’s degree in finance.

Norb worked as a vice president of finance and administration, retiring in 2004. He married Diane Delmarter on Dec. 24, 1992, in Gresham.

Norb was a member of First Baptist Church of Gresham and the Restore Hope Board.

He is survived by his wife; daughter, Christine Lemons; and brothers, Russ and Paul Varga.

Betty Culp

Betty Culp

Betty Ruth Culp passed away at her daughter’s home on Wednesday, September 4th in the afternoon at the age of 84.

A funeral service will be held at Sandy Assembly of God Church on Thursday, September 12th at 1:30. A graveside service will follow at Cliffside Cemetery.

She was born, Betty Ruth Jones in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Marion and Susie Jones. She began her schooling in Chickasha and as a young girl the family moved to Sandy on a small farm near Kelso road and made their permanent home. Betty graduated from Sandy High School and was later married to Jewel Culp. They raised five children on their property adjacent to his brother's and sister’s home on Coalman Road.

Betty devoted her life to meeting the spiritual needs of those around her. She taught Sunday school and had a love for children. She also dedicated much of her time to helping some of the older women in her church and community. Many people will remember Betty as a loving and kind person who kept her doors open to everyone.

Betty is survived by her five children, Jewel Don Culp, Dorothy Cassidy, Judy Culp-Lewis, Clifford Dale Culp and Janice Culp; two sisters, Joice Linhart and Ruby Culp; 9 grandchildren: Kimberly Smith, Darcy Hill, Guy Cassidy, Krista Underhill, Vincent Culp, Ryan Culp, Gabriel Cassidy, Jacob Lewis & Riley Culp and 7 great grandchildren: Makenzie Smith, Kelsey Smith, Wyatt Smith, Reagan Cassidy, Mason Culp, Gage Culp & Weston Culp. She is preceded in death by her husband in 1986; her 2 brothers and 1 sister.

Geraldine G. Terrill

Geraldine G. Terrill

Geraldine passed away peacefully at home with her family beside her on September 1, 2013. She was born to Lester and Nira (Keller) Shafer on August 14, 1953.

She lived all her life in the Sandy area where she went to school, married, and raised her family. She had an infectious personality and loved by all who knew her. She enjoyed traveling, camping, and spending time with family and friends.

Her parents and one grandchild preceded her in death.

Her husband Norman Sr. survives her along with her children, Jimmy Jr.; Norman Jr. (Pam); Cheryl (Bill); Richie (Margaret); John; and Danny; step mother, Nancy; brother, Lester; sisters, Lana; Sandra; and Laura; 20 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 2 on the way; and her beloved dog, Sadie Marie (Missy girl).

There will be a private service for family and close friends on September 13, 2013 at Cliffside Cemetery at 10:00 AM. A Celebration of Life (potluck) at the home of Norman Terrill Sr. will follow this at 2:00 PM
