December 14, 1926 to December 19, 2013 -
Doris Plantz, a long-time Sherwood resident and volunteer, died peacefully in her home at Avamere Sherwood on December 19th. She had just celebrated her 87th birthday.
The daughter of Jacob G. & Martha Beier Schmidt, she was born at home in Frazer, Montana, on December 14, 1926, graduated from high school in Centralia, Washington, and spent the majority of her life in Sherwood.
Doris had two children, John and Sandi, by her first marriage with Norman Barksdale. Her second marriage to William (Willie) Plantz spanned nearly 44 years.
Doris was a long-time member of the Sherwood Community Friends Church, the Sherwood Senior Center, and the local Lioness Club. Industrious, determined and giving, she put in countless hours of service with each organization.
Doris and Willie received the Sherwood Citizen of the Year award in 1998 for their outstanding service to the community of Sherwood. Doris loved fishing with Willie, gardening, sewing, canning, crafts, and spending time with her family, great grandson and friends.
Surviving are daughter Sandi (Reid) Noel of Salem; sister Alice Goertzen of Meza, Arizona; grandsons Devin (Tera) Noel of Parker, Colorado; Derek (Emily) Noel of Hillsboro; Jesse (Lindsey) Barksdale of Tacoma, Washington; Aaron Barksdale of Tacoma, Washington; great-grandson Isaac Noel; several nieces and nephews; and the Hill family. Her husband, Willie, and son, John Barksdale, preceded her.
Doris was laid to rest on December 30th at Skyline Memorial Gardens in Portland. A celebration of her life will be held Jan. 25, 2014, at 2 PM at the Sherwood Community Friends Church.
