John David Burke

John David BurkeJohn David Burke, 89, of Aurora, died at home on September 16, unable to recuperate from a fall.

He was born June 24, 1924, in Laramie, WY, to Harold Marion and Helen Mercedes Burke. One of the last surviving WWII members of Aurora American Legion Post 110, he had enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Asiatic Pacific area. In 1946 he went to school on the G.I. Bill, graduating from the University of Wyoming in Animal Production. In 1953, he returned for a teaching certificate in vocational agriculture and became an advocate for the Future Farmers of America in Wyoming schools.

In 1957 he married Mary Lou Roberts. As president of the Laramie Co. Education Assn., he was sent to Seattle as a representative at the 1963 NEA convention. In 1965, they moved to the Northwest where he taught vo-ag in Washington and Oregon.

While in Woodburn, the family affiliated with the Missouri-Synod startup church Hope Lutheran.

In 1980, Honorable John Burke, Mayor, City of Hubbard, received a letter of appreciation and thanks from the Dept. of the Interior for attending in Washington, D.C., the Mayors of Small Towns & Cities workshop and for contributions to the Young Adult Conservation Corps (YACC) program.

He’s survived by his wife, Mary Lou; sons Kelly and daughter-in-law Marianna of Oregon City, Mikel and Darren of Salem; daughter Erin and son-in-law Mark Cooper of Fort Collins, CO; two grandsons and two granddaughters. His parents preceded him in death as did his older sister, Patricia Butcher.

Celebration of Life will be Wed., September 25, at 11:00 a.m., at Woodburn‘s Hope Lutheran church, S Settlemier & Parr Rd., with the Reverend Rex Longshore officiating, followed by military honors at Willamette National Cemetery inurnment at 2:30.
