Arthur Asa Ase Phelps Jr.

May 31, 1927-Aug. 17, 2013-


Arthur Asa “Ase” Phelps Jr. died on Aug. 17, 2013. He was 86. He was born May 31, 1927, in Tucson, Ariz., to Arthur and Imogene Phelps.

The family moved to Philomath when he was a young child with his siblings Florence and Patty.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a young man. He served in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. He retired after 24 years of service with the title of Chief Boatswain’s Mate. He went to work at Standard Oil Refinery’s tanker fleet in San Pedro, Calif. In 1947, he married Hazel Patterson. In his late 60’s they started a dairy farm in Colton that operated for almost 20 years; during this time they took on the responsibility of raising their niece Cragin, and two nephews Art and Ed Starr. They enjoyed golfing and were regular attendees at Foothills Community Church. Mr. Phleps Jr. enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and enjoyed the companionship and food at the local restaurants. They were married for 61 years.

He is survived by his sister, Flo Bigo, of Milwaukie; sons, “Chip” Phelps, of Honolulu, Hawaii. and Craig Phelps of Salinas, Calif.; adopted niece, Cragin Low, of Estacada; adopted nephews, Art Starr of Forest Grove and Ed Starr of Redmond; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel and sister, Patty.

A memorial and graveside service was held on Aug. 21 at Foothills Community Church and Adams Cemetery. Pastor Dale Satrum officiated.
