Ernest L. Thompson

December 13, 1924 - December 11, 2013

Newberg resident Ernest Lindley Thompson died Dec. 11, 2013. He was 88.

He was born Dec. 13, 1924, in Merwin, Mo., to Oscar and Rachel (Pickett) Thompson.

On July 25, 1946, he married Louise Urban.

He was a conscientious objector during World War II and spent three years in alternate service at camps in California, North Dakota and Iowa.

After the war, he completed his junior year at Northwest Nazarene College but before he could complete his senior year, he was recruited as a pastor for Friends Church in Boise, Idaho. He spent 50 years pasturing at 10 different Friends Churches in seven states. He retired in 1997. He eventually graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Azusa Pacific University.

Survivors include: sons Mark, of Dundee, and Stuart, of Grand Junction, Colo.; daughter Janene Bowden, of Sycamore, Ill., six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Louise, and brothers Harold and Everett.

A memorial service will held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Newberg Friends Church.
