Margaret Clemmens

February 14, 1912 - June 30, 2014

Margaret C. Ramsey Clemmens passed away June 30, 2014 in Roseburg, Oregon, at the home of her daughter, Roberta. Margaret was born in Skidmore, Kansas, on February 14, 1912 – a Valentine’s baby. She was the daughter of John and Agnes Ramsey and was the third of five children. Her father, a coalminer, succumbed to the 1918 flu when Margaret was six. Agnes remarried a few years later and in 1930 the entire family moved to Enterprise, Oregon, then to Newberg, where Margaret met Kenneth Clemmens, a flower grower, in 1932 and became his wife in 1934.

During those early years, the couple raised acres of flowers for the wholesale market in Portland. Kenneth’s specialty was violets, strawflowers, and sweet peas plus many other varieties. Two children, Roberta and Don, were born and raised on the farm. In 1948, they opened a florist shop on 1st Street, which later was combined with a dress shop. Margaret became on accomplished florist and maintained her love of flowers throughout her life. She took great joy in arranging flowers for her children’s and grandchildren’s weddings.

After Kenneth became incapacitated with multiple sclerosis, Margaret worked for Equitable Savings and Loan for a short time. She then became Dr. L.H. Peek’s receptionist in 1955, where she worked for over 20 years. She was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church, a member of the F.L. Club of the IOOF, and a volunteer “extraordinaire” for the Newberg Thrift shop for many years. She carried that volunteer spirit into Friendsview Manor where she and Viola Pratt managed the Manor thrift store for years. They were named manor “Volunteers of the Year” in 2005 and were recognized at a statewide meeting. Margaret will be remembered by her family for her love, kindness and quiet and profound sense of faith. She’s also loved for her angel food cake, lemon meringue pie, her famous French cookies and great sense of humor among MANY other things! She so enjoyed her 100th birthday celebration in 2012 when over 150 people came to honor her.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth (1991), son Don (2009) and four siblings. She is survived by sister Rose O’Hara of Florida; daughter Roberta and Larry Hall of Glide, Oregon; daughter-in-law Judy Anderson; grandchildren Ed Hall and Dee of Glide; Hilary Hall of Medford; Eliot Hall and Lesley of Vermont; Andrea Brock and Andrew of Medford; Jeff Clemmens of Newberg; Wendy O’Daniels of Redondo Beach. Great-grandchildren include Daniel, Samuel and Samantha Hall; McKenzie and Aimee Carter; Keenan, Molly and William Brock; Jaimie Clemmens; and Mark and Sarah Reels.
