Joe G. Burleson, 87, of Heppner, Oregon died Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Kadlec Regional Medical Center at Richland, Washington. A memorial service with military honors will be held 12:30 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Heppner.

He was born November 7, 1926 at O’Donnell, Texas the son of James B. and Billie Graham Burleson. He was raised in O’Donnell for a time and then the family moved to Tatum, New Mexico where he attended school. He joined the military during WWII and served with the United States Marine Corps. He then attended college for a time but then reenlisted with the Marine Corps, serving during the Korean Conflict. Following his ­honorable discharge he met his future wife, JoAnne Bono.

On August 27, 1953 the couple was married at Delta, Colorado. The couple would have been married for 59 years next month. They moved to Oregon in 1960.

He was in the poultry business as a processor and then as a distributor. His distribution business extended from Southern California to the Canadian Border. The couple was longtime residents of Canby, Oregon and then moved to Heppner 14 years ago following his retirement.

Joe served on the State Poultry Commission and was active in community affairs in both Canby and Heppner. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign War, American Legion, and the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife; JoAnne L. Burleson of ­Heppner, sons; Warren H. Burleson of Milwaukie, ­Oregon, and William B. Burleson of Yakima, ­Washington, 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death was a brother, William Gene Burleson.
