Gheen R. Abbott III

Oct. 24, 1927 to Aug. 27, 2013 -

Gheen Abbott passed away peacefully at his home in Lake Grove on August 27, 2013 with his two sons by his side. He will forever be remembered as a kind and compassionate man, whose wise and humorous nature touched the lives of many. He was a supportive husband, father and friend and an avid reader and conversationalist who kept on top of current world events.

Gheen was born Oct. 24, 1927 in Los Angeles, Calif. His youth was spent soaking up sun on the beaches of San Diego and fishing out in the ocean with his father and uncle. He graduated from La Jolla High School and then served three years in the Army Signal Corps from 1946 to 1949, ultimately being placed in charge of his radar unit on the island of Okinawa.

He enrolled at the University of California Berkeley, where he received his associate’s degree, before completing his bachelor’s degree in economics at the University of Southern California.

His civilian career began at Convair Aircraft Company as an aircraft radar technician. He worked at Fairchild Semiconductor and other electronic companies in the San Francisco Bay Area, before joining Guy F. Atkinson Construction Company as a bookkeeper and timekeeper.

In 1955, Gheen married Constance K. Lewis of Seattle, Wash., and had two sons, Gheen R. Abbott IV and Christopher L. Abbott. In 1968, he moved his family up to Lake Oswego, due to a company transfer involving the completion of the I-205 freeway project. Following the completion of the project, he transitioned into becoming a small business owner of an insulation company, while simultaneously initiating a career as a licensed tax consultant. He continued to prepare individual tax returns until his retirement in 2012.

Gheen is survived by his two sons.

A Memorial will be held for Mr. Abbott on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Lakewood Center for the Arts, 368 S. State Street in Lake Oswego.
