Nancy Wood, a longtime resident of Willamette Heights, died Friday the 20th of October, 2017 at her daughter's home in West Linn. Nancy was born on June 25, 1929 in Wenatchee, WA to William D and Edna M DePuy.
Nancy graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1947 before moving on to receive a degree in drama from Whitman College, where she won the Edith Blackman Merrell Davis Award in dramatic arts (beating out classmate, Adam West) in 1951. After college, Nancy moved to Seattle where she earned a teaching certificate. In 1955, she met Richard C Wood at a tavern in Seattle's University District. They were married six months later on March 17, 1956. They lived in Renton, WA and Santa Monica, CA before permanently relocating to Portland in 1959.
Nancy taught at several Portland area schools before taking a break to raise her five children. During this time, she discovered what she described as her "special talent" for serving on committees and attending meetings. She ecame involved with numerous community organizations, including the Chapman School PTA, First Presbyterian Church, and Friendly House Community Center. Once her youngest daughter started school, she was offered a job at Friendly House, eventually becoming the director of the Friendly House Senior Center, where she worked until her retirement in 1993.
After retirement, she helped out at the New Friends of the Beaverton Library book store and volunteered as an usher for the Portland Center for Performing Arts. Nancy continued to serve on committees and attend meetings at Calaroga Terrace, where she lived from 2012 until her death. Nancy had a wicked sense of humor and her ability to tell an anecdote and deliver a punch line was unrivaled.
Nancy is survived by her daughters, Amy Wood and Hannah(aka Wendy) Wood of Portland, Ore., Kathryn Kraushaar (Russell) of Battleground, WA, and Mary Bernert (Joseph) of West Linn, Ore; grandchildren Sarah Whitcher, Jacob Wood, and Donald Johnson of Portland, Ore., and Abinet Berhanu of Paris, France; and one greatgrandchild. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard C Wood, and her son, Richard C Wood Jr.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 1200 SW Alder, on Tuesday, ovember 14, 2017 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may e made to Friendly House.
