Seaside holds off Gladstone, 46-43, to reach 4A semis
FOREST GROVE -- Seaside's Jackson Januik lead all scorers with 11 points, and Attkin Babb added nine points, leading the top-ranked Seagulls to a 46-43 victory over Gladstone in Thursday's OSAA Class 4A boys' basketball quarterfinals at Pacific University.
Peyton Westerholm made one of two free throws with 13 seconds remaining to help secure the win and send the Seagulls (22-1) into Friday's 3:15 p.m. semifinals against North Bend.
Gladstone had an opportunity to send the game into overtime, but Lyric Warren's 3-point attempt missed the mark in the waning seconds.
Briggs Tatom and Warren finished with 10 points each for the Gladiators (15-7), who will take on Philomath is Friday's 9 a.m. consolation game at Forest Grove High School.
After Gladstone's Jordan Watts knocked down a 3-pointer that drew the Gladiators into an 11-11 tie with 1:05 to play in the first quarter, the Seagulls closed the half on a 12-4 run to take a 23-15 lead into the break.
Seaside extended its lead to as many as nine points, 35-26, when Hunter Thompson hit a 3-pointer with 7:08 to play in the fourth quarter.
Gladstone crept within two points, 45-43, when Tatom knocked down a trey with 26 seconds left, but then Westerholm was fouled by Warren and converted one of two free throws to help send the Seagulls into the semifinals for the second season in a row.
