Kennedy duo earns rare honor
As good as Kennedy seniors Brett Traeger and Jack Suing were on the football field — and they were very good — they may have been even better in the classroom.
The teammates were honored as such last month at the National Football Awards Banquet in Portland, where the two earned $1,000 scholarships as being part of the 16 finalists to be nominated for the banquet.
Suing and Traeger became the first Kennedy student athletes to be nominated to the top 16.
But the honors of the evening didn't stop there. The pair topped that honor, making school history by being named the top two student athletes at the event for the 4A-1A classifications.
The achievement is so rare, it is only the second time in 56 years in which one school has had the top two kids selected for the academic honor, which is based on a combination of academic achievement, SAT scores, community service, school involvement and athletic ability.
