The right printer(s) really makes a difference. Just ask Griffin Hampson of Cartridge-Network

CARTRIDGE-NETWORK - Griffin HampsonConsumers and businesses are “sold” printers and typically “buy on price” instead of matching needs with alternatives, let alone predetermining what the cost per page is. Yes, it varies widely.

Know your needs. For consumers, home offices and small offices, many current multi-function (all-in-one) inkjet printers are excellent, most have the latest innovations (wireless, print by phone or tablet), and their associated high-yield cartridges deliver very cost effective cost per page. Many other inkjet printers, while slightly less expensive and routinely “on sale,” cost considerably more to use on a cost-per-page basis.

Be redundant. For small to medium size businesses, we often see multi-function color laser printers in use, even when 70 percent to 80 percent or more of their prints are in black. This approach costs users five to eight times more per page than using a black-only printer. Really? Yes, really.

An alternative option is a “beefier” black-only multi-function printer and an additional separate color-only printer. In addition to reducing your operating costs, you will have redundancy and eliminate the end of day printer problem, where one has no other way to produce material for the next day’s morning presentation, causing stress and panic.

Many small business are sold “entry level” printers which are not really good for business. Inexpensive? Yes! Appropriate for the environment? Hardly. For as little as an additional $100 or $200 there are many more appropriate choices.

Beware of reviews. The state of “professional printer reviews” is, frankly, not great. All but the worst printers receive positive reviews, and most reviewers aren’t putting new printers through rigorous analysis, often simply repeating a manufacturer's spec sheet. Most importantly, they omit the most important issue. What is the printer’s cost per page to print? We always cover that most important issue with customers.
