Is that mold on your roof?
Brought to you by Brian Jarvis and Stan Robinson - Pacific West Roofing - ROOFING INSIDER -
Have you noticed black streaks on your roof shingles before? You may think it's mold causing expensive damage to your roof, but fortunately "Roof mold" is really a type of blue-green algae, and it's development can easily be nipped in the bud.
Before the moisture starts to seep beneath the shingles and into the structure of your roof, you'll need to spray the affected area (typically on the North side of your home) with a Zinc Sulfate solution. Simply mix five parts water with one part zinc powder to create your own solution.
This spray has the added benefit of killing of any mosses or lichens on your roof as well, making it perfect for keeping your roof in pristine condition. As they turn white and die, simply brush them off yourself or let the Oregon rain do it for you!
Because the mixture can harm plants located near the foundation of your home, be sure to wet any plants nearby to prevent damage. And speaking of preventing damage, NEVER use a pressure washer to clean your roof, as its powerful spray can lead to damaged or loosened shingles.
Once your roof is clean, you can annually reapply your zinc solution to prevent algae and other fungi from returning, ensuring your roof will look great all year long. If you need help tackling any fungus on your roof, call Pacific West Roofing at 503-635-8706 today!
