Bits & Pieces: A record swim

Oregonian Michelle Macy has made history, swimming the North Channel from Ireland to Scotland in record time — 9 hours, 34 minutes — about 20 minutes faster than the previous record.

With the July 15 swim, Macy, who prepared for the swim by training in the Willamette River, became the third person to complete the Oceans Seven, swimming’s equivalent to the Seven Summits for mountain climbing. The other bodies of water are: Cook Strait, Molokai Channel, English Channel, Catalina Channel, Tsugaru Strait and the Strait of Gibraltar.
