Wanderlust, Umbrella juggles acts

Festival performers swing into action with a gathering of clowns, comedy and cabaret

by: COURTESY OF UMBRELLA FESTIVAL - Brittany Walsh, a contortionist/hand balancer/tumbler/floor performer, will be a big part of the Umbrella Festival of Circus and Comedy, April 3-6 at Alberta Rose Theatre.Cirque du Soleil may be performing in our city at the Expo Center until early May, but Wanderlust Circus wants fans of aerial acrobats, jugglers, physical comedians, musicians and vaudevillians to know that Portland features its share of creative artists.

The Umbrella Festival of Circus and Comedy, now in its third year, has been deemed bigger and better than ever.

Organizers David “Leapin’ Louie” Lichtenstein and Noah “William Batty” Mickens — performers themselves — have invited the finest artists for four days of thrills and tunes and laughs at Alberta Rose Theatre, 3000 N.E. Alberta St., April 3 to 6.

Tickets are $40 (weekend pass), $100 (preferred weekend pass) and $12 to $30 for single nights and available at albertarosetheatre.com; minors younger than 18 are welcome at each performance except Saturday night, April 5.

Each of the performances has been designed to feature performers in specific areas:

by: COURTESY OF UMBRELLA FESTIVAL - The Wanderlust Circus, which includes Noah William Batty Mickens, is a highlight of the growing Umbrella Festival at Alberta Rose Theatre.• At 8 p.m. Thursday, April 3, circus acts, led by the headliner The Wanderlust Circus, are accompanied by nine-piece bohemian swing band The Wanderlust Circus Orchestra.

• At 8 p.m. Friday, April 4, it’s all about clowns and comedy and some light-hearted music; Hilary Chaplain, one of the world’s foremost female clowns, performs.

• At 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, “The New Generation! Family Showcase” features newcomers and student troupes, including AWOL Dance.

by: COURTESY OF UMBRELLA FESTIVAL - The Wanderlust Circus, which includes acrobatic burlesque duo Trixie Little and The Evil Hate Monkey, is a highlight of the growing Umbrella Festival at Alberta Rose Theatre.• At 8 p.m. Saturday, the sexy cabaret acts, such as burlesque, drag and comedy, take the stage — hence, minors will not be allowed into the theater.

• At 8 p.m. Sunday, April 6, it’s the grand finale, with the wonderful Vagabond Opera and El Radio Fantastique joining bizarre physical comics Trixie Little and The Evil Hate Monkey.
