Discovery Channel to air 13 shows, talk show and more

Marine biologists and aquariums are not necessarily on board with the thinking, but “Shark Week” returns for its 27th season of weeklong shows featuring the great predators of the ocean.

The Discovery Channel will put on 13 shows, starting Aug. 10, plus an hourlong live talk show, “Shark After Dark,” each night.

Among the topics: “Sharkageddon,” about a spike in recent Hawaii attacks; the zombielike state of sharks; a monster hammerhead in Florida; “Spawn of Jaws 2: The Birth”; legendary attack survivor Paul de Gelder visiting sharks off Australia; great footage shows such as “Air Jaws: Fins of Fury” and “Jaws Strikes Back.”

For equal time, of course, we present the other side: The Oregon Coast Aquarium “bites into ‘Shark Week’ myths with facts and fun,” a news release says.

The Aquarium’s Shark Conservation Weekend aims to separate fact from fiction “without the bloody curtain of Hollywood myths” during events 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 9 and 10.

There will be scuba diver presentations in the shark-infested Open Sea exhibit and education program “The Flying Great White Sharks of South Africa.” There’ll also be a chat with aquarium artist Michael Cole as he paints a tiger shark. See for a complete schedule.

The aquarium is at 2820 S.E. Ferry Slip Road in Newport.
