Head to the cat show (the kitties command it)

Proceeds from 11th international show to benefit food bank

The cats expect you to get there, somehow, and admire them.

The 11th International Cat Show takes place from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 30-31 at Holiday Inn Portland Airport, 8439 N.E. Columbia Blvd. It’s a food drive for the Oregon Food Bank; admission is $6 and two cans of food, or $8 without the food, and parking is free.

Organizers say, “See over 300 cats from bare to fluffy, sleek to cobby, jungle eyes to fabulous felines! This is the show of shows for cat lovers.”

These are not necessarily your household cats, the ones that yell for food and water out of the faucet, chase the red dots, roll on their back for attention, cough up hairballs, patrol the neighborhood for intruders, or sleep for hours in their kitty condo.

These are mostly purebred cats. They are superior even to the cats who think they are superior to every other living creature. These are cats showcased at such shows because they are so beautiful — the long-legged Savannahs, the regal Sphynx, the hairless Chausie with elflike ears, the big-footed Pixie-bobs, the mini-leopard-looking Bengals, the Russian naked breed Peterbald.

The Lykoi, the cat affectionately known as the Werewolf Cat, will be making another appearance. Honor him with your presence.

Judges from around the world will be working in six continuous rings to determine finalists among purebreds and regular house cats. Among other breeds expected to be up for judging: Balinese, Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest Cat, Ragdolls, Abyssinian, Japanese Bobtail, Kurilian Bobtail Longhair, Devon Rex, Cornish Rex, Selkirk Rex, Siamese, Manx, Cymric, Minuet Longhair — all interesting, if only because of their breed names.

And, there’ll be vendors. Who couldn’t leave without a new teaser, more cat nip, a fluffy blanket, a cat tree and, of course, jewelry?

The Scooper Bowl V, noon Saturday, will pit contestants in a litter-box cleaning competition based on speed and accuracy. “This necessary chore, and the skills that go with it, are often underappreciated, and never celebrated,” promotions say. “Not anymore.”

The contents of the litter box are edible, by the way, not just by an intruding dog. They’ll be jelly beans. (We’re not endorsing eating them, of course).
