A women's hoops shot of Portlandia

Scoresheet

What says Portlandia more than a Portland State-University of Portland basketball game?

PSU is trying to drum up added interest in Sunday’s 2 p.m. women’s showdown at Stott Center by giving the game a Portlandia theme.

Local food carts, microbrews and Voodoo Doughnuts will be on hand.

The Vikings are worth a look, too. They’re 4-1, with wins over Oregon and Butler.

The Viks have accomplished guards in Courtney VanBrockling and Kate Lanz, and Oregon State transfer Angela Misa, 6-1, is providing some dirty work in the middle.

Misa had 21 rebounds against Butler — the most by a Viking since Linda McLellan, better known to many for her long coaching career at Benson High, pulled down a school-record 23 versus San Jose State in 1980.

The Pilots are 1-5 going into tonight’s 7 p.m. meeting with Washington at Chiles Center.

UP beat PSU 62-54 last year and leads the all-time series 25-23.

Oregon is following Oregon State’s lead in football in one area. The Ducks tentatively are scheduled to open their 2013 season at home against Nicholls State, which plays OSU on Saturday to make up the 2012 season opener that was postponed by Hurricane Isaac. That’s a tough two-fer to the state of Oregon for the Colonels of Thibodaux, La.

Quite a battle going on — Oregon’s field-goal kicking versus Dwight Howard’s free-throw shooting. Howard has the lead this season. He’s 49.7 percent at the foul line. The Ducks are 41.7 percent (5 of 12) on field goals.

The Portland Timbers might not have to wait quite as long as expected for Caleb Porter, their coach-in-waiting, to turn his attention to the MLS side. Porter’s No. 1-ranked Akron Zips went down in the round of 16 Sunday, losing their NCAA playoff game to Creighton on penalty kicks. Porter had been expected to officially begin his Timbers job on Dec. 15. The Division I title game is Dec. 9.

Antoine Hosley, a junior guard from Jefferson High, is the sixth man for Division I Utah Valley University. The 6-0 junior is averaging 7.4 points in 18.0 minutes per game, and the Wolverines are 3-5. Utah Valley, in Orem, is the alma mater of Trail Blazers guard Ronnie Price. Hosley averaged a team-high 14.6 points per game last season at North Idaho College.

Blocking for the Miami Dolphins on their last-second, winning field goal versus Seattle on Sunday — former Southridge High star Jeron Mastrud. The former Kansas State tight end is in his third NFL season.

Oregon sports history

Dec. 3, 1989 — Former Trail Blazers forward Fernando Martin, Spain’s most beloved basketball player, dies in a car crash in Madrid. He was 27. Martin was the only Spaniard ever to play in the NBA when he was with Portland for the 1986-87 season. He left Portland to play for Real Madrid.

Dec. 4, 2008 — Oregon agrees in principle to pay Chip Kelly $7 million, plus numerous bonuses, over five years when he takes over for Mike Bellotti as Ducks football coach.
