SPOKANE, Wash. — With Mac Carruth stopping 37 shots, the Portland Winterhawks won their holiday break getaway game Tuesday 4-3 over the host Spokane Chiefs.

Nicolas Petan scored twice, giving him 24 goals this season, and Adam De Champlain got the game-winner at 10:40 of the third period before a crowd of 4,619 at Veterans Memorial Arena.

Taylor Peters also scored a goal for the Hawks, who had leads of 1-0, 2-0 and 3-2.

Portland improved to 29-5-1-0 and has a team-record 59 points going into the break.

The Winterhawks, who are five points ahead of Kamloops in their battle for the best mark in the Western Hockey League, are off until Dec. 28, when they play at Tri-City.

Portland has a 12-point lead on second-place Spokane (23-10-1-0) in the U.S. Division.

Troy Rutkowski had two assists on Tuesday for the Winterhawks.

Carruth raised his 2012-13 record to 16-2-0-0.
