Summary: Oregon State figures to have nine returning starters on offense, including kicker, plus eight on defense, including punter

Schedule: The season opens with home games Aug. 31 against Eastern Washington and Sept. 7 versus Hawaii. The other nonconference game on the schedule is Sept. 21 at San Diego State.

QUARTERBACK

* Cody Vaz, senior

Depth: Junior Sean Mannion, who started eight games this fall, will be 1B to Vaz’s 1A going into spring ball. After Vaz’s Alamo Bowl performance, though, the competition begins anew.

RUNNING BACK

Depth: Juniors Terron Ward and Malcolm Agnew also return, but watch for redshirt freshman Chris Brown, who will be in the mix.

WIDE RECEIVER

Split end: Richard Mullaney, sophomore

Slotback: * Kevin Cummings, senior

Flanker: * Brandin Cooks, junior

Depth: This remains the Beavers’ strongest unit, with senior Micah Hatfield, junior Obum Gwachum and redshirt freshman Malik Gilmore ticketed for rotation duty.

TIGHT END

Connor Hamlett, junior

Depth: Sophomores Caleb Smith and Kellen Clute and junior Tyler Perry, along with redshirt freshman Dustin Stanton, will compete for playing time.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Left tackle: * Michael Philipp, senior

Left guard: * Josh Andrews, senior

Center: * Isaac Seumalo, sophomore

Right guard: * Grant Enger, senior

Right tackle: Derek Nielsen, junior

Depth: Sophomore David Keller, a transfer from Fresno State, will be in the thick of it, along with sophomores Gavin Andrews and Josh Mitchell and redshirt freshmen Garrett Weinreich and Grant Bays.

KICKER

* Trevor Romaine, junior

Depth: Romaine earned his stripes with an excellent sophomore season. Grayshirt Garrett Owens will be his backup.

DEFENSIVE LINE

End: * Scott Crichton, junior

Tackle: Joe Lopez, junior

Tackle: Mana Rosa, senior

End: * Dylan Wynn, junior

Depth: Defensive tackle is the weakest spot among returnees, but the Beavers have plenty of options, including moving ends John Braun and Devon Kell to tackle. Sophomores Desmond Collins, Lavonte Barnett, Brandon Bennett-Jackson and Akeem Gonzalez and redshirt freshman Noke Tago also are impressive prospects on the line. Plus, OSU is adding junior college tackles Siale Hautau, Edwin Delva and Kyle Peko. All three immediately will be in the mix to start.

LINEBACKER

Middle: Joel Skotte, sophomore

Sam: * D.J. Alexander, junior

Will: * Michael Doctor, senior

Depth: Senior Dyllon Mafi, junior Jabral Johnson, sophomore Jaswa James and redshirt freshmen Josh Williams, Rommel Mageo and Caleb Saulo could factor into these positions, as well.

DEFENSIVE BACK

Strong safety: * Tyreque Zimmerman, junior

Free safety: * Ryan Murphy, junior

Cornerback: * Rashaad Reynolds, senior

Cornerback: Sean Martin, senior

Depth: JC transfer Steven Nelson should be immediately in the competition to start at cornerback. Sophomores Peter Ashton and Micah Audiss and redshirt freshmen Cyril Noland-Lewis, Zack Robinson and Kendall Hill at safety and senior Jovan Stevenson, juniors Malcolm Marable and Mishawn Cummings, sophomore Larry Scott and redshirt freshman Tyler Hasty at cornerback will get their shot at rotation spots.

PUNTER
