College football: Oregon (11-1) meets Kansas State (11-1) in the Fiesta Bowl, 5:30 p.m. (ESPN), at Glendale, Ariz.

Boys basketball: The PIL 5A has a key league game, with Jefferson at Roosevelt. Nonleague PIL games include Lincoln at Wilson, and Grant at Madison. All three games start at 7:30 p.m.

Men’s basketball: Portland State (3-6, 1-1 Big Sky) returns from a 12-day layoff to face Montana State (3-7, 0-2) in Bozeman, 6 p.m. PT. ... Portland (7-8) opens its West Coast Conference season with a road trip and an 8 p.m. game against San Diego (7-8).

Women’s basketball: Portland State (7-4, 1-1 Big Sky) is coming off a 64-61 win at Portland that gave the Vikings a two-game sweep of the Pilots. Courtney VanBrocklin had 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists for PSU. The Viks return to conference play at home, welcoming Montana State (7-4, 1-1) to Stott Center for a 7:30 p.m. game. ... Portland (5-8) launches its WCC slate at home, with Santa Clara (7-5) at Chiles Center at 7 p.m.

Friday, Jan. 4

Blazers: Portland is halfway through a four-game trip. Game three is 5 p.m PT (CSN) at Memphis. Former Blazer forward Zach Randolph (17.0 points per game, 12.5 rebounds) was one of 13 NBA players averaging a double double through Tuesday. Coach Lionel Hollins’ Grizzlies are battling for at least a top-four spot in the NBA Western Conference.

Boys basketball: Two state contenders meet at 7:30 p.m., when fifth-ranked Central Catholic (8-2) plays at top-ranked Lake Oswego (11-0 going into its Jan. 2 game at North Salem).

Girls basketball: The PIL 5A has a key clash, as defending champion Cleveland travels to Wilson. Also in the league, Roosevelt plays at Jefferson, and Benson is at Madison. All three games tip off at 7:30 p.m. ... South Salem visits Lincoln in a nonleague game, 7:30 p.m. ... In the Mt. Hood Conference, St. Mary’s Academy visits Gresham, 7 p.m., while Central Catholic is at Barlow, 7:15 p.m., and David Douglas goes to Centennial, 7:15 p.m.

Wrestling: Cleveland High plays host to its annual Don York Tournament, named after a former coach at the school. Cleveland, Franklin and Jefferson are among 16 teams competing over two days.

Men’s basketball: Lewis & Clark (6-4, 0-2 Northwest Conference) looks for its first NWC victory, taking on Whitman (8-3, 2-0) at 8 p.m. at Pamplin Sports Center. ... In the Cascade Collegiate Conference, Warner Pacific (13-4, 4-1 CCC, ranked 14th in NAIA Division II) returns to league play with a 7:30 p.m. game at Northwest (14-3, 4-1, No. 21). Concordia (6-8, 1-4 CCC) hits the road for a 7:30 p.m. league game at Evergreen State (2-11, 1-4).

Women’s basketball: Oregon State (6-6) begins its Pac-12 season with a 7 p.m. home game against USC (3-8). ... Oregon, which went 2-10 in preseason play, opens its conference season at home against UCLA (9-2), 7 p.m. ... Lewis & Clark (11-0, 2-0 NWC) is ranked sixth in the nation among NCAA Division III teams and is coming off an 80-68 win ove visiting George Fox on Dec. 31 (the 21st-ranked Bruins’ first conference loss in 33 outings). L&C has a tough weekend ahead, though, playing host to conference contenders Whitman (9-1, 2-0) and Whitworth (8-2, 2-0). The Whitman game is 6 p.m. Friday at Pamplin Sports Center. In the CCC, Warner Pacific (7-7, 3-2) has a 5:30 p.m. game at Northwest (2-10, 1-4), while Concordia (5-9, 0-5) takes on host Evergreen State (2-6, 2-3), also at 5:30 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 5

Blazers: Portland wraps up a trip of four games in five nights with a 5 p.m. PT matchup (CSN) with Kevin Love and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Winterhawks: Portland’s first game of 2013 is at home. The Hawks take on Everett at 7 p.m., at the Rose Garden.

Boys basketball: The PIL Showcase at Marshall has five games — David Douglas-Franklin, 12:30 p.m.; Cleveland-Wilson, 2:15 p.m.; Madison-Benson, 4 p.m.; Roosevelt-Lincoln, 5:45 p.m.; and Grant-Jefferson, 7:30 p.m.

Men’s basketball: PSU visits Montana (6-4, 2-0 at the holiday break), 6 p.m. PT. ... Portland’s second WCC game of the season is 7 p.m. at Pepperdine, which was 3-8 going into a Jan. 3 game with Gonzaga. ... Lewis & Clark is at home for an 6 p.m. league tip with Whitworth (10-1, 2-0 NWC through 2012). ... Warner Pacific plays at Evergreen State, 7:30 p.m., and Concordia is at Northwest, 7:30 p.m.

Men’s basketball: The first of two Civil War games has 11-2 Oregon at 10-3 Oregon State, 7 p.m. (ROOT).

Women’s basketball: Oregon plays host to USC, 1 p.m., Matthew Knight Arena.

Monday, Jan. 7

Blazers: Back at the Rose Garden, Portland gets ready for an all-Floridian team short stretch. First up is a 7 p.m. game (CSN) with Orlando. The Magic went into 2013 with a 12-19 record. Then Portland gets two-plus days to prepare for the only visit of the season by defending NBA champion Miami Heat and coach Erik Spoelstra, formerly of Jesuit High and the University of Portland.

Girls basketball: The Mt. Hood Conference has three league games, highlighted by Central Catholic at David Douglas, 7 p.m.,

Tuesday, Jan. 8

Winterhawks: Portland is in the middle of a six-game homestand, and game four in the stretch is 7 p.m. versus Prince George at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The teams also will meet at the MC at 7 p.m., Jan. 9.

Boys basketball: Top local games include Lake Oswego at Jesuit, 7:15 p.m.; Sunset at Central Catholic, 7:15 p.m.; Jefferson at Lincoln, 7:30 p.m.; and Beaverton at David Douglas, 7:30 p.m. In PIL 5A league games, Roosevelt is at Cleveland, Benson is at Franklin, and Wilson is at Madison, all at 7:30 p.m.
