KENNEWICK, Wash. Rookie forward Oliver Bjorkstrand had a hat trick Saturday night as the Portland Winterhawks won 7-0 at Tri-City.
Bjorkstrand scored the Hawks' first, fifth and final goals. He gave Portland a 1-0 lead at 16:18 of the first period.
Bjorkstrand raised his season goal total to 20 the most by any first-year player in the Western Hockey League as the Winterhawks posted their second victory in two nights.
Bjorkstrand also leads WHL rookies in points with 40.
Portland, which leads the WHL with 81 points, is off until Tuesday, when the Hawks visit Everett.
Also Saturday, Brendan Leipsic had two goals, giving him 32 this season, while Nic Petan scored his 33rd goal and rookie defenseman Seth Jones got his ninth goal.
Jones' power-play score put Portland on top 2-0 at 9:59 of the second period. Leipsic scored 1:01 later, and Petan struck 43 seconds after Leipsic, and the Winterhawks went into the final frame on top 4-0.
Chase De Leo had three assists for Portland, and Ty Rattie had an assist that extended his points streak to 13 games.
Brendan Burke picked up the win in goal, stopping 25 shots. It was his third shutout of the season.
Portland fired 40 shots, went 1 for 6 on power plays and shut down both of Tri-City's power plays before the announced crowd of 6,100 at Toyota Center.
The Hawks improved their record to 39-7-1-2 and they maintained a four-point lead over the No. 2 team in the WHL Western Conference, Kelowna, which went to 37-10-2-1 with a 6-2 home victory over Prince Albert.
Tri-City, fifth in the Western Conference, fell to 28-19-1-2, 59 points.
