SALT LAKE CITY — Al Jefferson scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Mo Williams contributed 20 points and nine assists as Utah polished off Portland 112-102 at EnergySolutions Arena.

Derrick Favors added 18 points off the bench as the Jazz (39-36) moved a half-game ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers (38-36) in the battle for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Wesley Matthews scored 23 points on 9-for-13 shooting for Portland (33-40), which lost its fifth straight game.

The Trail Blazers (33-41) shot .582 from the field but allowed the Jazz to fire at a .542 clip. Portland was hurt by committing 16 turnovers to six for the Jazz.

Portland cut an 11-point Utah lead to 79-72 late in the third quarter, but the Jazz took an 87-74 advantage into the final period. The Blazers never got closer the rest of the way.
