SPOKANE, Wash. — The Portland Winterhawks are one win from the Western Hockey League Western Conference finals.

The Hawks beat the Spoaken Chiefs 3-1 Tuesday night to take a 3-0 lead in their best-of-seven conference semifinals.

Game 4 is 7 p.m. Wednesday, also at Spokane.

Mac Carruth stopped 25 Chiefs shots to lead Portland in Game 3.

Ty Rattie gave the Winterhawks a 1-0 lead with 47 seconds left in the first period, off an assist by Nicolas Petan.

At 8:01 of the second period, Petan scored to make the score 2-0.

Spokane got within one on a power-play goal at 16:24 of the second period, but neither team scored again until Taylor Leier found an empty net with 15 seconds remaining before the announced crowd of 3,708.

Portland went 0 for 3 on power plays and killed three of four Spokane chances with the man advantage.
