OVERLAND, Kan. The Portland Thorns tied Kansas City 1-1 Saturday in the first game of the National Women's Soccer League.
Portland forward Christine Sinclair hit a penalty kick in the 67th minute to erase a 1-0 deficit.
The penalty came when Thorns forward Danielle Foxhoven, a 63rd-minute substitute, was fouled in the box.
Kansas City scored in the third minute against Portland goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc.
The Thorns finished the game with a 4-3 edge in shots on goal before an announced crowd of 6,784.
