North stars come out in time to win Schwab Bowl 21-14
HILLSBORO The North reclaimed the Les Schwab Bowl trophy Saturday night with a 21-14 victory over the South in the 66th annual Oregon prep all-star football game at Hillsboro Stadium.
The North increased its lead in the series to 32-30-4.
The South took a 7-3 lead with 7:33 remaining in the second quarter when Zach Floyd of Tigard scored on a 15-yard sweep left.
Mitch Seeley, from Central Catholic High, kicked field goals of 32 and 28 yards in the first half, but the North trailed 7-6 going into the fourth quarter.
On the first play of that period, though, Lincoln Highs John Williams connected with Kendrick Bourne of Milwaukie for a 12-yard touchdown.
The North made the score 14-7 on the conversion. From an offset formation, Century's Sam Riddle took the snap and threw to Clackamas' Jon Kenion, who had snapped the ball.
The South evened the score at 14-14 with 11:20 remaining, as Floyd scored a 6-yard touchdown.
With 9:34 remaining, North running back Mitchell Thompson of Oregon City crashed through the line for the winning, 1-yard touchdown.
The North put together 423 yards of offense (259 passing, 164 rushing).
The South had 322 yards (221 on the ground, 101 in the air).
Williams finished 10 of 17 for 164 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Wilsonville receiver Tanner Shipley, plaing for the North, caught three passes for 80 yards and was named the games MVP. Devauntae Hoffman of Gresham gained 72 yards on 13 carries and was named the North back of the game. Kenion was honored as the Norths top lineman.
Floyd ran 14 times for 88 yards and two touchdowns and was named the Souths star back. Chet Spears of Sheldon was voted the South lineman of the game.
