Sports recap: Four Hawks go in NHL draft

The Portland Winterhawks had four players selected in Sunday's NHL draft.

The Nashville Predators took defenseman Seth Jones with the fourth pick.

The top three picks were Nathan MacKinnon (Halifax center, No. 1, to the Colorado Avalanche), Aleksander Barkov (Finnish center, No. 2, to the Florida Panthers) and Jonathan Drouin (Halifax left wing, No. 3, to the Tampa Bay Lightning).

Portland forward Nic Petan went in the second round, 43rd overall, to the Winnipeg Jets.

Hawks forward Oliver Bjorkstrand was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the third round, No. 89.

Goaltender Brendan Burke was picked by the Phoenix Coyotes in round six, 163rd overall.

Ex-Hawk Niederreiter goes to Jets

• The New York Islanders dealt former Portland forward Nino Niederreiter to the Minnesota Wild for forward Cal Clutterbuck and Minnesota's third-round, No. 70 pick in the NHL draft.

Niederreiter, 20, was taken fifth overall in the 2012 draft but had not worked himself into a role with New York, which described Clutterbuck as a player that could give the club immediate help.

Niederreiter had two goals and an assist, with a minus-30 rating, in 64 career games as an Islander. He spent most of his time in the American Hockey League, where he scored 28 goals (10th in the league) and had 22 assists in 74 games.

Blazers add PF Robinson

• The Trail Blazers are giving 6-10 power forward Thomas Robinson a third NBA chance.

Portland has taken Robinson off Houston's hands as the Rockets clear cap space for free-agent center Dwight Howard.

The deal, which becomes official July 10, sends Robinson to the Blazers for the draft rights to European fowards Kostas Papanikolau and Marko Todorovic and two future second-round draft picks.

Robinson, who turned 22 in March, was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2012 draft by Sacramento, which traded him to Houston. The 235-pounder from Kansas averaged 4.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in 15.1 minutes last season.

In five games versus Portland, he averaged 5.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in 16.5 minutes.

Mo Farah wins in England

• Portland-based double Olympic champion Mo Farah used a strong kick to pass three Ethiopians and win the 5,000 meters at a Diamond League track and field event Sunday in Birmingham, England.

Farah finished in 13 minutes, 14.24 seconds.
