THE STORY

Portland's women's soccer team suffered its first road loss in seven tries, giving up goals in the 10th and 71st minute.

WHAT IT MEANS

The Thorns remained one point behind National Women's Soccer League leader Sky Blue FC, which lost 3-2 at the Boston Breakers on Sunday. Sky Blue (8-3-3) has 27 points; Portland (8-3-2) has 26. Third place belongs to Kansas City (7-4-2), with 23 points. Western New York Flash is fourth at 6-2-4, 22 points.

NOTES

• Boston's first goal came from long range by Lauren Cheney, who leads the NWSL with eight scoring strikes. The goal ended the Thorns' road shutout streak at 284 minutes.

• Cheney has three goals in three games against Portland.

• Second-half sub Merritt Mathias scored from short range for the Breakers.

• Portland goalie Karina LeBlanc made four saves; KC's Nicole Barnhart had five saves.

• The Thorns played the final 10 minutes with 10 players, after defender Marian Dougherty went off with an apparent knee injury. Portland already had used its three allowed substitutes.
