The Portland Timbers won their exhibition game with Monarcas Morelia 1-0 Wednesday night at Jeld-Wen Field.
A penalty kick by Mamadou "Futty" Danso in the 40th minute provided the scoring in the inaugural Copa Verde Cup match against the Mexican club.
Monarcas is on its preseason tour of the United States, preparing for its Liga MX season. One of its defenders was called for a handball just inside the penalty area on a shot by Timbers forward Jose Valencia, setting up the penalty shot.
Portland's Milos Kocic played the entire game in goal and made two saves.
The Timbers had eight shots to Monarcas' six, and the visitors led in corner kicks 6-5.
Portland resumes MLS play Sunday with a 2 p.m. PT game at the Columbus Crew.
