SOMERVILLE, Mass. The Portland Thorns FC pulled out a 2-1 victory Sunday on the road against the Boston Breakers.
Midfielder Meleana Shim scored the deciding goal in the 86th minute.
Forward Alex Morgan broke through offensively with a goal and an assist.
The game drew an announced crowd of 2,978 at Dilbey Stadium.
The Thorns stayed on the heels of National Women's Soccer League leader Sky Blue FC. Portland is 9-4-3 (30 points), while Sky Blue is 9-4-4 (31 points). FC Kansas City is third at 8-4-5 (29 points), and the Western New York Flash are fourth at 7-4-6 (27 points).
The Flash beat visiting Sky Blue 3-0 on Sunday.
Boston fell to 5-6-5 (20 points) and is sixth in the eight-team NWSL.
Shim's goal came on a drive from the right side of the penalty box, after midfielder Tobin Heath gained possession and passed ahead to Morgan near the top of the box.
Morgan scored in the 24th minute from nearly 25 yards.
That goal tied the game, as Boston took a 1-0 lead 13 minutes into the match.
Karina LeBlanc, Portland goalie, made four saves.
The Thorns' next game is 4 p.m. Sunday at Jeld-Wen Field against the Chicago Red Stars.
