Thorns top Reign 2-1 on Sinclair goals
TUKWILA, Wash. – The Portland Thorns won their regular-season finale 2-1 at the Seattle Reign FC on Saturday and will finish third or fourth heading into the National Women's Soccer League playoffs.
Forward Christine Sinclair scored both Portland goals before an announced sellout crowd of 3,855 at Starfire Sports Complex.
The Thorns overcame a third-minute goal by Seattle forward Megan Rapinoe, with Sinclair scoring answering in the eighth minute and getting the winner in the 83rd to finish with eight in 19 games played this season.
The Western New York Flash beat the visiting Boston Breakers 2-1 earlier Saturday to clinch the top spot in the NWSL going into the postseason.
The Thorns can slip to fourth if Sky Blue FC beats the host Washington Spirit by three goals or more on Sunday.
Portland, though, is all but guaranteed to be on the road to face Western New York or FC Kansas City in the semifinal round of the four-team playoffs on Saturday. Sky Blue FC could move into the No. 2 spot with a victory by six goals or more on Sunday.
