Thursday, Aug. 22

Hops — The Hillsboro Hops are on the road against the Eugene Emeralds in Class A Northwest League baseball, 7 p.m., PK Park.

College volleyball — Warner Pacific begins a six-match, three-day season-opening run at Spokane, facing Montana State-Northern at 1 p.m., and Carroll College at 5 p.m. ... Concordia also begins its season on the road and in a tourney. The Cavaliers will play today and Friday at La Mirada, Calif., opening at 11 a.m. versus Cal State San Marcos and then meeting Vanguard University at 7 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 23

Hood to Coast — The 32nd annual Hood to Coast Relay begins its 198-mile journey from Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood to the turnaround at Seaside. The event has 1,050 teams of 12 runners and 3,600 volunteers. The first wave of competitors starts at 6:30 a.m., with the event continuing through Saturday. For information, go to hoodtocoast.com.

College soccer — The Portland Pilots welcome Marquette to Merlo Field for a 7 p.m. women’s match, and the Portland State women play at Oregon, 5 p.m.

Hops — Hillsboro wraps up a three-game series at Eugene and an eight-game road trip, facing the Ems at 7 p.m. at PK Park.

Roller derby — The Wheels of Justice — the travel team of the Rose City Rollers — has a home bout against Seattle’s Rat City All-Stars, 8 p.m., at the Oaks Park Hangar.

Saturday, Aug. 24

Thorns — Portland opens the National Women’s Soccer League playoffs on the road. The Thorns, who finished third in the regular-season standings, take on No. 2 FC Kansas City, 11 a.m., at Shawnee Mission District Stadium in Overland Park, Kan. KC is coming off a 2-1 home loss to Chicago, while Portland’s last outing was a 2-1 win at Seattle. Both teams were 11-6-5, with the Thorns trailing 1-2-1 in the series.

Hops — The Boise Hawks visit Hillsboro Ballpark to begin a three-game NWL baseball series, 7 p.m.

Roller derby — Axles of Annihilation play host to Seattle’s Rain of Terror in a battle of B travel teams, 8 p.m., Oaks Park Hangar.

Sunday, Aug. 25

Timbers — Portland’s MLS regular season, which began March 3, swung into its final third this week and still has two months to go. The Timbers travel to Seattle for a 7 p.m. match with the Sounders (ESPN2). It’ll be game 25 of 34 for Portland.

Hops — Game two of three between Hillsboro and Boise starts at 1:30 p.m. at Hillsboro Ballpark.

College soccer — Marquette’s women take on the PSU Vikings, 10 a.m., Hillsboro Stadium, while UP visits Oregon, 5 p.m. ... The Concordia men open their season at home against University College of the Fraser Valley, 4:30 p.m., Tuominen Yard.

Running — Willamette Park in Portland is the base for a Back to School Fun Run, which includes a 5K run/walk, a one-mile kids run and a half-mile kids dash. The second annual event raises money for backpacks and school supplies. Go to globalbackpackproject.org for information.

Monday, Aug. 26

Hops — Hillsboro concludes a three-game home series with the Boise Hawks. First pitch is 7 p.m. at Hillsboro Ballpark.

College volleyball — Warner Pacific plays host to Simpson University, 6 p.m.

Golf — Bob Gilder’s Platt Golf Challenge, a fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation/Oregon Chapter, is hosted by the Corvallis Champions Tour pro at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains.

Tuesday, Aug. 27

Golf — Caddy for a Cure has a 5 p.m. fundraiser at The Oregon Golf Club in West Linn.

Wednesday, Aug. 28

Hops — After a day off, Hillsboro launches its final home series of its first Single-A season. The Hops take on the Eugene Emeralds at 7 p.m.

Horse racing — Portland Meadows’ race card begins at 1:45 p.m.
