Winterhawks get 7-4 home win


The Portland Winterhawks, idle since losing both games at Kelowna last weekend, ripped into the Kamloops Blazers on Saturday night, beating them 7-4 at Moda Center.

The Hawks outscored the Blazers 5-2 in the second period to lead 6-3 and finished with a 45-26 edge in shots for the game.

Kamloops cut the gap to 7-4 with 2 1/2 minutes left in the game.

Portland got goals from six players (in order): Adam Rossignol, Derrick Pouliot, Brendan Leipsic, Chase De Leo, Oliver Bjorkstrand (penalty shot), Alex Schoenborn and Pouliot.

Pouliot's first goal, 59 seconds into the second period, came on a power play and put Portland ahead for good and 2-1.

Pouliot's other goal found an empty net with 54 seconds to go.

Schoenborn also scored with the man advantage, as the Winterhawks improved their recent power-play play, going 2 for 6.

Brendan Burke picked up the win, making 22 saves.

Josh Hanson, Nic Petan and Bjorkstrand had two assists apiece.

Portland improved to 4-3-0-1 (9 points), while Kamloops fell to 2-7-0-0 (4).

Announced attendance was 7,701.

The Hawks return to the Moda Center ice at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Tri-City.
