Montana State edged Portland State 79-76 Thursday night at Stott Center.

Montana State improved to 3-0 in the Big Sky and 8-6 overall, while PSU fell to 0-3, 5-7.

Both teams shot well, with MSU making 56.3 percent and PSU sinking 54.5 percent.

Four Vikings scored in double figures: Dashaun Wiggins had 20 points, Marcus Hall 19, Tim Douglas 14 and Kyle Richardson 10.

The Bobcats' bench outscored the Vikings' subs 28-7.

The teams were tied at 57-57 with 12 minutes remaining, as the game had 14 ties and 14 lead changes in the opening 28 minutes.

Montana State then took the lead for good and upped it to as many as nine points, at 68-59 with six minutes to go. Portland State got within 72-71 with 1:35 left, but free throws by the Bobcats held off the Viks the rest of the way.

  • • Cal beat Oregon for the 12th time in a row Thursday night.

    The Bears won 96-83 at Matthew Knight Arena, dropping the 17th-ranked Ducks to 13-2 overall and 1-2 in the Pac-12.

    It was Cal coach Mike Montgomery's 15th consecutive victory over UO, including his time at Stanford.

    "We've got some soul-searching to do," Oregon coach Dana Altman said. "We've got a lot of work to do. Defensively, we're not very good. There's no other way to put it."

    Cal shot 52.5 percent from the field.

    Oregon made 55.6 percent in the first half to stay within 46-42, but the Ducks hit 29.7 percent (1 of 12 on 3-pointers) in the final 20 minutes. The Ducks finished at 40.5 percent.

    Joseph Young led Oregon with 29 points. Mike Moser had 15 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double, and Johnathan Loyd had 14 points, his second-highest total of the season.

    Cal is 11-4 overall and 2-0 in the Pac-12.

    Oregon will play host to Stanford at 2 p.m. Sunday.

  • • Oregon State beat visiting Stanford 81-72 Thursday night at Gill Coliseum, with big man Eric Moreland getting 17 points and 15 rebounds for his first double-double since coming off suspension a week earlier at Colorado.

    Moreland also had four blocks and four assists as OSU improved to 9-6 overall and 1-2 in the Pac-12.

    Roberto Nelson added 21 points for the Beavers, while Hallice Cooke had a career-high 16 points in his first career start.

    Stanford slipped to 9-5, 0-2.

    The Beavers' next game is 5 p.m. Saturday at home against Cal.


    Portland State lost 89-78 at Montana State on Thursday night, despite double-doubles by senior forwards Allie Bock and Angela Misa.

    Brock had 22 points, a game-high, and 10 rebounds. Misa had 15 points and led all rebounders with 13 for her sixth consecutive double-double, but left with 1:33 remaining after landing awkwardly on her left leg.

    PSU fell to 2-2 in the Big Sky and 4-9 overall. MSU improved to 2-1, 7-5.

    The Vikings' next game is 1 p.m. PT Saturday at Montana.
