The newest thing in college basketball recruiting is something called the "verbal commitment."

High school stars such as Hillsboro's Dean Derrah are ending speculation and much of the distractions by declaring their intention (Derrah choosing Oregon State).

In football, meanwhile, Jesuit High quarterback David Norrie has emerged as a blue-chip prospect.

Elsewhere, OSU announcer Darrell Aune and Eugene Register-Guard reporter Bud Withers are named as Oregon's 1980 sportscaster and sportswriter of the year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association in Salisbury, N.C.

And Gary Yaremchuk scores two goals in a 59-second span of the first period to lead the Portland Winter Hawks over Calgary 5-2 at Memorial Coliseum, with Clint Malarchuk starring in goal for coach Ken Hodge.
