SEATTLE Super Bowl XLVII will match the best offensive team in the NFL against the best defensive team.
The AFC champion Denver Broncos have been unstoppable on offense all season behind the arm of future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning. Denver has averaged 457.3 yards and 37.9 points per game, 330.3 through the air and 117.1 on the ground.
The Seahawks defense has been dominant, too. Seattle gave up only 273.6 yards and 14.4 points per game this season.
Something's got to give Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
Its an extraordinary opportunity to go against a guy that set all the records in the history of the game, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said of Manning, after Seattles 23-17 win Sunday over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game.
The incredible production that (the Broncos) put up this year, what a great challenge, Carroll said.
Manning put together perhaps the best season ever by a quarterback, setting the NFL record with 55 touchdown passes.
He deserves to be there (in the Super Bowl) because of what hes done this year with this team and that whole club, Carroll said.
Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson said it will be an honor to compete against Manning in the Super Bowl.
I have so much respect for Peyton and what hes done his whole entire career, Wilson said. I want to be like him one day in terms of all the things that hes done and how hes gone about his business.
"When you think about a quarterback and you think about all the things that go into it, his mind is just so strong. All the things he does at the line of scrimmage and all that, and thats where Im trying to get one day.
That said, Wilson understands that the title game will be more than him against Manning.
Its the Denver Broncos versus the Seattle Seahawks, Wilson said. It will be a great game, a great battle. Well prepare the right way and make sure were ready to go and come out with a lot of energy.
Members of the Seattle defense said they look forward to the match-up.
Peyton Manning is a good quarterback and great competitor, but we welcome the challenge, strong safety Kam Chancellor said. Challenges are always welcomed.
Said free safety Earl Thomas: As a competitor, you always want to play the best. Some people thought San Francisco had a chance to beat us, so we took that personal. We know that this chance (playing in the Super Bowl) is rare. As an ultimate competitor, you always want to be the best.
It could be a cold weather Super Bowl, but defensive end Michael Bennett said the Seahawks aren't worried about that.
We are ready for it, Bennett said. Whatever happens, we just want to be there, and we dont care about the weather. We cant make excuses about the weather. We just want to go out there and win the game."
Said Wilson: Playing in New York will be a great moment. The field is still 100 yards (by) 53 and a third (yards), and we cant wait.
Thomas said he will treat the Super Bowl like any other game.
People make the game bigger than what it is, he said. I still treat this like Pop Warner. This is fun. This is a childs game. You should enjoy every moment, soak this in, and just be yourself, express yourself.
The Seahawks and Broncos have played this year. That was in preseason, though, and while the Seahawks won 40-10, it will be much different in the Super Bowl. Carroll said his team will be ready.
Were not going to take this challenge lightly, he said. Were going to go after this thing, and were not going into this game any other way but thinking that were going to win. And these guys dont know any other way.
