SCORESHEET: Galen Rupp is USATF athlete of the week
Galen Rupp has been named USA Track and Field athlete of the week.
Rupp, from Portland, broke the U.S. men's indoor 5,000-meter record last week at Boston University.
The former Central Catholic High and University of Oregon star ran the eighth-fastest all-time indoor 5,000, winning the event in 12:01.26 on Jan. 16.
The previous mark of 13:07.00 belonged to Lopez Lomong of Lake Oswego, who set his mark last year.
Rupp pulled away at the end from former NCAA cross-country champion Sam Chelanga, who finished in 13:04.35.
Rupp earned an Olympic silver medal in the 10,000 in 2012 at London, where he was the first American to reach the podium at that distance since Billy Mills in 1964.
Rupp is a six-time national champion.
The race went great, he said. It was the first race of the season, so I was definitely a little nervous going into it. My coaches had me really prepared, and I was very happy to break an American record.
Its a tremendous honor to be named USATF Athlete of the Week. Obviously there are a lot of great names who have won this honor, and its tremendous to be mentioned in their company.
