Jan. 29, 1998: Pilots tie for first in WCC

Midway through the West Coast Conference men's basketball season, the Portland Pilots have a share of first place.

The Pilots pull even with Santa Clara and Gonzaga by beating Santa Clara 76-65 before 1,565 fans at Chiles Center. Portland improves to 5-2 in the league.

The star for UP is 6-9 freshman Philip Dejworek from Ulm, Germany. He surprises the Broncos with a team-high 17 points, including 14 in the first half on 6-for-7 shooting from the field.

Guard Dionn Holton has a season-high 13 assists for the Rob Chavez-coached Pilots, who were picked to finish seventh in the conference by the coaches before the season.
