Jan. 31, 1989: Off-track betting comes to Oregon

Parimutuel wagering in Oregon is about to enter a brave new world.

The state's first off-track betting facility is set to open in three days at the Nomad Restaurant and Lounge in Boardman.

Also expected to go online this week is an off-track site at the Riverhouse in Bend.

Both places are having better equipment installed and tested, in order to offer wagering on live horse races at Portland Meadows and other tracks.

The Tom Tom Restaurant and Lounge in Roseburg also has been approved as an off-track location, and Portland Meadows is scurrying to line up places in Eugene, Medford, Astoria and Ontario.
