TRACK AND FIELD
Galen Rupp, track and field Olympian from Portland, has claimed his second consecutive Athlete of the Week honor from USA Track and Field.
Rupp has set two American records in recent weeks, the latest the two-mile indoor mark. He ran 8:07.41 on Jan. 25 at Boston University, bettering Bernard Lagat's 2013 record of 8:09.49. Lagat eclipsed a record held by Rupp, who ran 8:09.72 in 2012.
Rupp also broke the U.S. 5,000 meters indoor record Jan. 16 at Boston University, clocking 13:01.26. The previous standard was 13:07.00, set by Lake Oswego's Lopez Lomong last year.
Rupp, the 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the 10,000, plans to go after the U.S. and world indoor mile records on Feb. 15, also at Boston University. Bernard Lagat set the American mark, 3:49.89, in 2005. The world record of 3:48.45 belongs to Hicham El Guerrouj, who has held it since 1997.
The NBA All-Star Game may still come calling for Damian Lillard, but for now the Trail Blazers' second-year point guard has been picked to play in the Rising Stars Challenge game during All-Star Weekend at New Orleans.
The game, featuring top rookies and sophomores drafted by TNT personalities and mixed onto two rosters, will start at 6 p.m. PT on Friday, Feb. 14.
Lillard played in the game last season, scoring 18 points.
This year's squads will be drafted on TNT at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, with starters determined by fan online voting.
