Ducks' ace injured, out for 2014 season

by: COURETSY OF ERIC EVANS - Cole Irvin, Oregon Ducks lefty who was 12-3 in 16 starts last year, will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the 2014 season.(The Register-Guard) — Oregon sophomore pitcher Cole Irvin will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the entire 2014 season, the Oregon athletic department announced Monday.

Irvin is a major loss for the Ducks after he went 12-3 with a 2.48 ERA in 16 starts last season. Ducks coach George Horton will have to count on the depth on his pitching staff to find a replacement in the starting rotation.

Junior Tommy Thorpe is a returning starter who was 7-5 with a 2.16 ERA. Freshman Matt Krook, who was drafted No. 35 overall last summer out of high school by the Miami Marlins before choosing to play for the Ducks, is also expected to be a starter.

Junior Jake Reed started for the Ducks last season but is expected to pitch out of the bullpen this year.

Other starting candidates are senior Jeff Gold, who was 4-0 with a 2.20 ERA in 13 games, including five starts last season, and junior Jordan Spencer, who was 2-0 with a 4.00 ERA in 12 games including two starts.

Horton said last month that other candidates to start include freshmen Trent Paddon and Stephen Nogosek and sophomore Porter Clayton.

Oregon begins the season on Feb. 14 at Hawaii for a four-game series.
