WOMEN'S COLLEGE HOOPS: UConn next for Schimmel, Louisville; Concordias McCutcheon gets NAIA honor
Shoni Schimmel and the fifth-ranked Louisville Cardinals will take a 16-game win streak into Sunday's showdown at No. 1 Connecticut. That game starts at 10 a.m. (ESPN).
The Cardinals won Tuesday night at Central Florida 74-59 in Orlando. Louisville is 23-1, 11-0 in the American Athletic Conference.
Schimmel scored 11 points and had seven assists Tuesday as UCF fell to 9-13, 2-9 AAC. The senior guard from Franklin High was 4 of 11 from the field, going 3 of 7 from 3-point range.
UConn, which beat Louisville for the NCAA championship last year, also is 11-0 in the conference, and is 24-0 for the season.
Concordia University junior Caitlyn McCutcheon has been named NAIA Division II women's basketball player of the week.
The 6-2 McCutcheon, a center from St. Mary's Academy, averaged 23 points and 11 rebounds last week in leading the Cavaliers to road victories over College of Idaho and 16th-ranked Eastern Oregon.
McCutcheon shot 81.8 percent (18 of 22) from the field and 83.3 percent (10 of 12) from the free-throw line for the week.
She leads the Cavs this season in scoring (12.5 points per game), rebounds (9.2) and blocked shots (25).
