The state of the Trail Blazers and the status of their roster quality:

The coaches put newly arrived guard Von Wafer through his first workout with the team, with coaches teaching him some set plays in three-on-three drills.WAFER

The 6-5 guard is Portland's latest new hope to spark and add a warm body to the squad, which is minus All-Star Brandon Roy for a pending two-game trip as Roy rests a sprained right ankle.

Coach Nate McMillan also is without Darius Miles and Greg Oden, both with knee injuries.

And forward James Jones is iffy with a sore knee.

Water, a third-year pro, has come to Portland via a trade with Denver, which picked up guard Taurean Green.

Wafer will go on to score 19 points in eight games for the Blazers, and wind up with the Houston Rockets the following season.
